Audix FP5 Drum Mic Kit Review

Practical Buying Guide

Introduction:

Audix has always been one of the go-to options for drum microphones. Mics like the Audix i5 and Audix D6 are legendary.

While the prices of those mics aren’t exactly high compared to premium options, you may still be on a much tighter budget.

This is where the Audix FP5 Drum Microphone Kit comes in. It’s one of the brand’s most affordable mic sets, allowing any drummer access to Audix quality at a low price.

Let’s see what these mics are all about.

Key Features

This is a 5-piece drum kit mic set, giving you mics for the snare drum, toms, and bass drum. There aren’t any overhead mics included, so you’ll need to buy those separately.

Here are the names of each mic in the set:

  • 1x Audix f5
  • 1x Audix f6
  • 3x Audix f2

Each microphone has a dynamic design, meaning they’re made to be positioned close to the drums.

You also get four Audix clips to attach the mics to the drums.

Lastly, the mics come in an aluminum case with foam inserts inside to hold everything nicely together.

  • No overhead mics included, so you need to buy those separately

FEATURED ON

What to Expect from the Audix FP5 5-piece Drum Microphone Kit?

Quality

With these mics being so affordable, you’d expect their audio quality to be subpar. However, we were quite impressed at how clear the drum sounds came through when using them.

It did take a bit of clever positioning, but mixing with them became easy after that. We were able to get a really good drum mix with punchy tom sounds and a cracking snare drum.

The main thing to note is that you need to tune your kit well before using them. If you have a bad sounding drum set, these mics will just enhance those ugly tones.

Construction

If you just held an Audix f2 and an Audix i5 in your hand, you wouldn’t feel much of a difference. It’s more of the internal build where you’ll see the difference.

So, we can’t complain about the construction of each mic in this set. The casing seems to be very durable, giving you peace of mind when attaching them to your drums.

They’d make excellent travel mics for drummers that need to bring their own audio gear for gigs.

We also love the aluminum case that comes with the mics. Something like this is very standard for higher-priced microphone sets, so we like the idea of getting it with this affordable set.

Performance

The mics make the drums sound fantastic in a live setting. In studio settings, it’s a lot easier to notice the subtle quality differences compared to high-end mics.

So, live gigging is where we’d highly recommend these. If you need mics for a professional studio setup, it’s worth investing in the higher tier of Audix microphones.

With that said, if you’re just a drummer who wants to make YouTube videos, these mics will work perfectly fine. Just remember that you need to buy overhead mics separately to create a full setup.

Prive to Value:

The price tag is undoubtedly the most attractive part of this whole product. Five microphones for under $400? That’s enough to sell to anyone looking for good value.

Regarding the actual sound quality of the mics, we think the price tag is well worth what you get, especially if you want to use them for live gigging.

If you really wanted to, you could use the f5 as an overhead mic. However, you won’t get the same high-quality results as having actual overhead mics. But including overheads would have increased price to a level that may have been as competitive.

Conclusion

We mostly recommend this mic kit to beginners or drummers who are just getting into audio production. It’s a great affordable option if you don’t have a big budget.

It’s also nice to have cheaper mics for live gigs that you don’t need to worry about getting damaged as much.

Pair this kit with two good overhead mics, and you’ll be good to go!

I’m crazy about drums, it’s been my passion since I was 12 years old. I played in numerous bands going through different styles like Rock, Progressive, Pop & Jazz-Rock. After being featured in major music publications (DrumeoGuitar GuitarAudioIssuesMusicThinkTank I started this website to share my knowledge and create a resource for drummers of all levels.
