Earthworks FlexWand 730 Boom Mic Pack Review

Practical Buying Guide

Introduction:

With Earthworks being one of the best microphone companies in the music industry, you’re guaranteed to find some amazing products on offer.

One of the more interesting ones is the Earthworks FlexWand 730 Boom Stand Pack. You get a pack of three condenser mics here. While they’re not meant for drum kits, they could potentially work.

In this review, we’re going to take a deeper look at these mics to see how they perform.

Key Features:

This pack comes with three boom stand condenser microphones. They’re integrated into the stands, meaning the microphone and stand are a single package, and you need to connect a cable to the bottom of the stand.

These are actually meant to be choir microphones. With choirs being so big, you need condenser mics that can pick up all the voices. However, they could potentially work as overhead mics for drums.

Each mic has a 30Hz – 30kHz frequency response, and the max sound pressure level is 145dB.

FEATURED ON

What to Expect from the Earthworks FlexWand 730 Boom Stand Pack?

Quality

There’s no mistaking the incredible quality that you get from these mics. For choirs, they’re some of the best microphones available.

When it comes to recording drums, they sound full and warm, and they do a fantastic job of picking up all the sounds from every part of your drum set

You’d use two of them as overheads, and then you could use the third as a possible hi-hat mic or room mic to get some natural reverb.

Construction

The design behind these microphones is very clever. When you record a choir, it’s often quite risky to have long boom stands with cables running from them.

These mics have an integrated design, meaning the cable runs through the boom and out the bottom, so you don’t need to worry about any hanging cables.

It’s convenient for drummers too, but it’s not as useful as it is for tracking choirs. The solid base of each mic stand ensures that all the mics sit very sturdily, which is great.

Performance

Again, these microphones have been optimized for choir settings. They haven’t been optimized for recording drums, so you’re not going to get the same performance quality as some high-end dedicated drum kit microphones.

With that said, they’re easy to work with, as they give you warm and full sounds that sound good in a mix. You can then mix them with dynamic mics around the kit to get balanced sounds.

However, you can get better performance quality for drums from microphones that are a lot cheaper.

Price Value Ratio:

Earthworks microphones are very expensive. Whether you’re just getting one or a pack of three, you’re going to pay a high price.

This pack of microphones costs around the same as many high-end drum sets, so you really need to think about getting them and how much value they offer for the money.

If you need microphones for a choir, we can’t think of any better option. These mics are amazing. If you just need overhead drum mics, we don’t think these mics are worth the high price. Especially when there are other Earthworks condenser mics that are better optimized for drum sets.

Conclusion

Overall, we love the FlexWand 730 Boom Stand Pack. We think these microphones have an amazing design, and they work wonderfully in most settings you use them in.

We just don’t think the price is worth it if you’re looking for drum mics. It would be better to get dedicated drum mics with better optimization.

The 730 Boom Stand microphones are incredible for choirs. With three in this pack, you have enough reach to cover a fairly large choir, and the recording quality you’ll get will be pristine.

If you’re someone who runs a recording studio or live venue, these microphones can be incredibly valuable to own, so we also strongly suggest getting them if that applies to you.  They’re excellent microphones.
