Electro-Voice DRC-2 Drum Rim Clamp Review

Practical Buying Guide

Introduction:

If you have mics to place close to your snare and toms, you have two options for placement. The first would be to put them on full microphone stands, and the second would be to put them on clips.

Clips are much better, as they save a lot of space. While mics often come with clips, you may find yourself in a position where you need to get them separately.

In this review, we’re going to look at the Electro-Voice DRC-2 Drum Rim Clamp. It’s mainly made for Electro-Voice microphones, but a few others can fit.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Key Features:

The Electro-Voice DRC-2 is a rim clip that doesn’t have any screws. It just has teeth that attach to the rim of a drum, and you can easily attach and remove it with a single hand.

It’s made from a strong plastic, and it has one screw that allows you to position the angle of the microphone you have attached to it.

It also has a circular piece at the bottom that allows you to run an XLR cable through, giving you better cable management.

The whole idea behind it is that it’s easier to use than standard clips, and it won’t damage your rims.

What to Expect from the Electro-Voice DRC-2 Drum Rim Clamp?

Quality

The quality of the DRC-2 is really good for a rim clamp. It’s only made from plastic, but it’s solid enough to hold heavy microphones and keep them stable.

The best part about it is that it makes it so much easier to position microphones when setting up. It’s time-consuming to tighten and loosen screws to keep mics in place, so the fact that you can just latch this on is a game changer.

It’s also really durable, as most drummers who use this clamp have mentioned that it’s lasted years without any issues.

Construction

The mount has a ring loop at the bottom, which is good for two purposes. The first is to stick a finger through so that you can use one hand when clamping the mount.

The second is so that you can run an XLR cable through it to keep your cable management looking good and neat. By doing this, you can aim your cable at a position where it sits better within your setup.

The screw-less construction is great, and the mount just has plastic teeth that hook to your drum rims.

Performance

The big downside of this rim mount is that it’s not compatible with all microphones. It’s specially designed for the Electro-Voice ND44, ND46, and ND66 microphones.

However, you can put plastic washers in the clamp part to allow other brand microphones to fit easily. That’s what a lot of drummers do with Shure SM57s.

Price Value Ratio

This rim mount is quite expensive compared to a few others, but the easy design makes it well worth it for drummers that want to save a bit of time.

It’s especially worth it for studio engineers that constantly move microphones around.

With that said, you can get more affordable rim clips that are more universal in their designs.

Things To Consider:

How Long Do Drum Rim Clamps Last?

It depends on the drummers that use them. For some drummers, rim clips will last forever. As long as you don’t hit them, they shouldn’t wear out at all.

Other drummers tend to hit them accidentally, and that leads the plastic to get damaged and wear out.

Is Electro-Voice a Good Brand?

Electro-Voice is a great audio brand. While the brand isn’t quite as popular in the drum world as Shure or Audix, they make top-quality microphones that work really well for drums.

The DRC-2 Rim Clamp is proof of the kind of high-quality products that the brand makes.

Conclusion

You’ll be really happy with this clamp if you own Electro-Voice microphones. If you own others, you’ll just need to make the clamp a bit smaller to grip them better.

We highly recommend getting this!
