Have you ever been in search of a hi-hat stand and thought that most of your options are too expensive? We’ve all been there. It’s a lot harder to put down large sums of money on hardware than it is for drums or cymbals. After all, the hardware only holds your drum kit. You don’t get to play it.
However, hardware is vitally important, so you should invest all you can into getting decent drum hardware for your kit. There are a few more affordable options that are still quite decent. One of those is the 5707 hi-hat stand from Gibraltar.
We’re going to check this stand out and see what it offers and how it compares to the more expensive stands on the market.
The 5707 is a fairly regular hi-hat stand, with the most attractive feature being its price. While some stands from the top-quality brands cost as much as $600, this stand falls just under $100, making it one of the most affordable hi-hat stands you can get.
It has a double-braced leg design with a swivel mechanism for the pedal. This allows you to adjust the pedal to fit a double pedal next to it.
It has a standard hi-hat clutch that doesn’t offer anything extraordinary. It just does the regular job that hi-hat clutches are supposed to do.
Lastly, the stand is lightweight, and the pedal doesn’t have a floor board.
I’d say the quality of this hi-hat stand sits somewhere in the middle of all the options out there on the drum hardware market. It’s not trying to compete with the higher-quality stands. Instead, it does its job of being an affordable and sturdy stand very well.
It’s an ideal option for anyone who has a cheap drum kit that wants to upgrade the quality a bit. Getting a stand like this will make your hi-hats sit more securely next to you. Having a sturdier base to play from generally makes you play a bit better.
Even though it’s a cheaper stand, Gibraltar is known to put as much quality as they can in their lower-priced products. So, you’ll feel more comfortable with that information as you buy it.
There isn’t anything particularly interesting in the construction of the 5707. It has everything you’d expect from a hi-hat stand at a low price. However, let’s just go through the key details so that you’re aware of everything it has.
Firstly, the stand has double-braced legs. This means that each leg has two connecting brackets, making them a lot sturdier than if they were to have a single bracket.
At the end of each leg is a rubber foot that is large enough to keep the stand planted on the ground without any possible movement.
The pedal of the stand can be rotated. This allows you to move it to place a double pedal without the legs of the stand getting in the way. This is the one standout construction feature as a few hi-hat stands of the same price don’t have a pedal that swivels.
Unfortunately, the pedal doesn’t have a board beneath it. This makes the pedal feel slightly less durable.
The pedal has a very smooth action. This makes playing it feel easy and natural, and that’s exactly what you want from a hi-hat stand. Other than that, there isn’t much to say about the performance of the stand.
It doesn’t have any particularly interesting additional features that will improve performance. We wouldn’t expect that from such an affordable stand anyway. Just don’t expect that either!
If you wanted to upgrade the stand in a way that boosts performance capabilities, you should buy a separate hi-hat clutch that has more features such as a drop clutch.
The price-to-value ratio is where the Gibraltar 5707 thrives. Gibraltar is a brand that specializes in producing hardware, so all their hardware is top-quality. Even their cheaper hardware is amazing.
For less than $100, you’re getting a decent hi-hat stand that will last a fairly long time. Hi-hat stands from other brands that have the same quality will cost slightly more than the 5707 will.
So, it’s an awesome option if you want to get the best bang for your buck.
While the 5707 is a great stand overall, it’s not the most ideal option for a drum studio. When setting up a drum kit in a studio, you want to get the most heavy-duty and durable parts as the kit will sit there for ages.
The 5707 is a lightweight stand, so it would be better to get something much heavier. You’ll be spending more money on it, but it will be worth it over time as the stand will last decades.
The 5707 is a lot more ideal for gigging as its lightweight nature makes it easier to carry around. Also, it’s a cheaper stand, so breaking it accidentally won’t feel like it’s the end of the world.
If you bought a $400 stand and broke it on a gig, you’d probably never forgive yourself. Not such a problem with a stand that costs less than $100.
We’d recommend this stand to anyone who is new to drumming. It’s a fantastic beginner option that is a lot more affordable than many of the other hi-hat stands available. If you’ve never heard of Gibraltar, know that they’re a dedicated hardware company that makes immaculate drum hardware.
If you’re a more experienced drummer, you’re probably going to need something a bit better than the 5707. In that case, you’d need to look for something in the $200 – $400 range.
