Gretsch Drums G5 Single Bass Drum Pedal Review

Practical Buying Guide

Introduction:

Gretsch has two main hardware lines, which are the G3 and G5 lines. If you’re looking for some reliable and relatively affordable hardware, they’re both great lines to check out.

In this review, we’re going to check out the bass drum pedal from the G5 line. It’s a solid pedal that any drummer can use, but we’re going to take a deeper look to see what makes it good.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Key Features:

The Gretsch G5 Single Bass Drum Pedal is a dual-chain pedal that comes with a felt beater.

You can adjust the pedal height and beater independently, giving you a good amount of control over how the pedal feels to play.

It comes with a stable baseplate with carpet spurs for enhanced stability, and the offset hoop clamp allows you to adjust the pedal quite easily.

Lastly, it has a brushed metal footboard with the Gretsch logo near the bottom.

FEATURED ON

What to Expect from the Gretsch Drums G5 Single Bass Drum Pedal?

Quality

We would say that this pedal falls under the intermediate category. It has everything that drummers want in a good pedal, including a base plate, dual chains, and responsive action.

However, it lacks many of the adjustability features that you can find in higher-end pedals.  We’re impressed with the quality, but there are some much better pedals available if you’re willing to spend a lot more.

Construction

The construction quality of this pedal is solid. With dual chains driving the pedal, you get amazing response. It also feels very sturdy when you’re playing, thanks to the bass plate that sticks to the floor.

The only part that we found fault in was the beater. It’s a felt beater that works really well, but we’ve heard a few people mention that the shaft bent.

This isn’t a huge deal, though, as you can just replace the beater quite affordably.

Performance

Most drummers will love how this pedal feels when playing. With dual chains and a baseplate, you get as about as much stability as you can from a single bass drum pedal.

It allows you to easily play fast patterns, and there’s enough adjustability for most drummers to feel comfortable.

You just won’t enjoy the performance if you want to adjust finer details, as you can only do that with much higher-end pedals.

Price Value Ratio

The price is one of the best things about the Gretsch G5 pedal. It costs under $200, and it gives you fantastic quality and performance.

You can pay up to $600 for good pedals, and this one only costs a fraction of that. So, the price-to-value ratio is excellent.

It would be a lot better if it came with a dual beater, but you can add that yourself once you have the pedal.

FAQ

Is Gretsch a Good Hardware Brand?

Gretsch is one drum brand that doesn’t offer much drum hardware. In fact, the brand only has two main hardware lines, known as the G3 and G5 lines.

With that said, the hardware that comes from those lines is really good and reliable. Gretsch isn’t a good hardware brand like DW or Pearl, but the hardware that Gretsch offers is fantastic.

What is the Best Bass Drum Beater Type?

There’s no final answer to this, as different beaters give you different sounds. The harder a beater is, the louder and tighter the bass drum sound will be.

This means that felt beaters produce soft sounds compared to plastic and wood beaters that produce slightly louder ones.

The beater you use should depend on the style of music that you play.

Conclusion

Overall, the Gretsch G5 Single Pedal is a solid option for most drummers. It doesn’t offer anything fancy, but it does exactly what you want a single pedal to do.

It’s affordable and reliable, and that’s more than enough for most drummers. We highly recommend it. We just suggest swapping the beater out, as the one that comes with it isn’t the best.
