Roland TD713 Review

Practical Buying Guide

Introduction:

In Roland’s latest line of TD700 drum sets, the TD713 is the most affordable option. Even though it costs a bit less than the higher-tier versions, it still stands as one of the top new electronic kits in the market.

In this review, we’re going to take a deeper dive into what’s on offer. We’ll explore all of the features and discuss who this kit is good for. We’ll also discuss if it’s worth spending more money on the higher-tier kits in the line or if the TD713 is more than good enough.

Key Features

The TD713 is a 6-piece electronic drum set. The pads are a combination of digital and mesh pads, with the snare drum, hi-hat, and ride cymbal having digital pad designs.

The kit is run by the new V71 drum module. It’s Roland’s latest and greatest tool. You get 200 drum kit sounds and over 1000 other sounds to create your own kits with. You also get access to the DW Soundworks VST

A few new notable features are the V-Edit software tool and updated digital snare drum pad.

What to Expect from the Roland TD713?

Quality

While the TD716 and VAD716 are the better models, we never felt any quality dip when hearing the TD713. This is undoubtedly one of the best-sounding electronic drum sets available right now.

The digital snare drum performs just like an acoustic snare drum, and the high-end sounds from the module really bring it to life.

We’ve grown used to hearing Roland sounds over the years, but the brand’s new collaboration with DW has brought plenty of freshness to this module. Editing the sounds is also incredibly easy, and it adds a whole new layer of possibilities.

Construction

When comparing this kit to the TD716 version, the construction features are where you’ll see the biggest differences.

Most notably, this kit uses the same PDX100 tom pads that you get on all of the previous high-end Roland V-Drums kits. The TD716 has slightly upgraded versions. With that said, these PDX100 have always felt amazing to play on.

Another difference is that the 713 version has a smaller kick drum pad to keep it compact while the 716 has a full-sized kick drum. If you prefer to have a smaller footprint, this kick pad is the better option.

Finally, the rack that holds everything together is plastic. It’s quite stable and you’ll have no issues with it, but the 716 version has a higher-quality metal rack.

Performance

Roland keeps getting closer and closer to matching the natural performance quality of an acoustic drum set. The V71 module and the digital pads are what gets this kit to that point.

When you sit down and play the TD713, it feels and sounds incredible. The digital snare drum is the obvious highlight, as it even has a throw-off to turn the virtual snares off.

We would comfortably say that this is an excellent kit to use for live shows if you need to use an electronic set. It’s also an amazing option for churches that can’t use acoustic drums. It has premium performance quality, and we wouldn’t say that the performance quality is any less on this version compared to the 716.

Price to Value:

While this kit is expensive with its $6000 price tag, it’s a few thousand dollars less than the TD716 and the VAD716. So, it’s the ideal option for drummers that don’t mind losing out on a few features.

This also makes it the most competitive premium Roland drum kit when you compare it to the top options from other electronic drum brands. We’d say that it’s well worth the price tag, whereas the higher-end models are simply luxury options for those who can afford them.

Conclusion

While the Roland TD713 is the most affordable kit in Roland’s latest flagship line, we’d argue that it’s actually the best option. You still get amazing features and playability, and most working drummers would be happy with what is on offer here.

If you’re looking for a new high-end electronic drum set, this is definitely one you should consider!
