Roland TD-07DMK Review

Practical Buying Guide

Introduction:

Roland has been the top electronic drum brand for many years. However, most of their best kits come with very high price tags.

If you’re looking for something a bit cheaper, you may be wondering what your options are.

The good news is that the brand does offer a few more affordable options. In this review, we’re going to take a deep dive into the Roland TD-07DMK.

It’s a strong competitor in the market, but is it valuable enough to compete with similar kits from Yamaha and Alesis? Let’s find out.

Key Features

The TD-07DMK is a full mesh set. However, it just has a small rubber pad for the bass drum.

It then has two cymbal pads and a hi-hat pad.

The module comes with 25 preset drum kits and 25 user slots to create your own kits. All of the preset sounds are high-quality and very responsive.

The module allows for Bluetooth connections, letting you stream music while playing the drums through the same output source.

Finally, the kit is held together by a solid plastic frame.

FEATURED ON

What to Expect from the Roland TD-07DMK?

Quality

The sound quality is definitely the most impressive thing about this kit. You get the classic Roland sound samples, and the mesh pads do a great job of bringing them to life.

From what we’ve tried with other kits in the this price range, we’d argue that the TD-07 module still has the best sounds on the market so far.

It’s no surprise though, as the sounds have been heavily inspired by Roland’s higher-end module sounds.

Regarding the performance quality, everything performs very smoothly when playing the kit, so you never feel held back by technology. That’s often something that happens with e-kits.

With all that said, experienced drummers may still find many of the sound features lacking, so this is more a good option for beginner or intermediate players.

Construction

The kit has a very small footprint, allowing you to easily fit it into a small bedroom. That’s fantastic for drummers who are getting an e-kit due to the size.

You can also fold the pads away, so moving the kit constantly won’t be an issue.

The plastic frame that holds it together is surprisingly sturdy. Brands like Alesis offer chrome frames that are heavier, but we didn’t really feel a difference with this kit. The benefit is that the plastic frame makes it light!

The standout construction feature is the mesh pad design. Roland has always been at the top of the game with mesh heads, and you definitely feel that here.

Performance

Apart from the 25 preset drum kits, you can also create 25 of your own. There are a few sound editing tools, so you can really personalise those as much as you want. This is a fantastic feature that allows you to add plenty of personality to the kit.

Again, the mesh heads are great. They accurately take in whatever you are playing, allowing you to play patterns and techniques as you would on a normal acoustic kit.

The overall sound quality and performance is a lot better on higher-end Roland kits, but we think this kit is excellent for its segment.

Prive to Value:

The TD-07DMK has a decent price tag, considering everything it offers. It’s one of the best options for drummers who don’t want to spend more than $1000 for a kit. Also, it’s a bit cheaper than the standard TD-07KV kit, with the only big difference being the kick pad.

For that reason, we’d say that the price is good compared to the value. However, you can still get more affordable electronic kits that offer a few more features. They just won’t sound as good.

Conclusion

Overall, we highly recommend this kit to beginner or intermediate drummers. If you’re looking for something to practice with or you have volume constraints, you’ll love how this performs.

However, if you’re happy to spend a bit more, it would be better to get the TD-07KV version that comes with a better kick drum pad.

I’m crazy about drums, it’s been my passion since I was 12 years old. I played in numerous bands going through different styles like Rock, Progressive, Pop & Jazz-Rock. After being featured in major music publications (DrumeoGuitar GuitarAudioIssuesMusicThinkTank I started this website to share my knowledge and create a resource for drummers of all levels.
