9 Crazy Drum Sets

Practical Guide

Intro

One of the coolest things about drum sets is their expandability. You can buy a set and continue to add parts to it to allow you to play new things. Some people take this to the next level, ending up with some insane drum sets that make people long to play them.

Here’s a list of some of the craziest drum sets to check out.

9 Insane Drum Sets

1. Daru Jones

Daru Jones has a relatively minimalistic drum set. The crazy part about it is that all his drums are angled away from him. They’re also positioned very low to the ground.

A lot of people look at the kit and think that it’s positioned completely wrong. However, it works well for Daru’s playing style, and he’s played with some top-tier artists over the years.

2. Terry Bozzio

Terry Bozzio’s drum set is massive, and it consists of a multitude of drums and percussion instruments. It also has dozens of cymbals scattered all around. When sitting at this kit, most drummers have stated that it feels overwhelming.

Terry Bozzio utilizes it brilliantly, though. The biggest thought behind this kit is just how long it takes to set up.

3. Thom Sonny Green

Thom Green is Alt-J’s drummer. His kit is crazy for the fact that it doesn’t have a single cymbal. You can’t hear a cymbal being played on any of Alt-J’s songs, and that’s a fact that people only realize once they get told.

He utilizes his drum set so well that most people don’t realize he’s not using any cymbals.

4. Danny Carey

Danny Carey is an incredibly famous drummer in the rock music world. He’s been playing for Tool for most of his career, and his drum setup consists of weird and wonderful percussion instruments.

Instead of using classic rack toms, he often uses timbales to get tighter and punchier sounds. He also utilizes electronics pretty heavily.

5. Neil Peart

Neil Peart was the legendary drummer for the band Rush. He had an insane drum kit setup near the end where it was set up in a 360-degree design. One side had his acoustic DW kit. The other side had a Roland electronic kit

He used his sit brilliantly when playing for Rush, and his drum solos on it were immense.

6. Tommy Lee

Tommy Lee has done some crazy things on stage with Motley Crue. One of the craziest has always been when he does the upside down drum solo. This kit is set up with a rig that lifts him hundreds of feet up in the air. He then plays the drums while upside down.

7. Marcus Gilmore

Marcus Gilmore is another drummer with a minimalistic setup. The crazy thing about his rig is that he uses two hi-hat stands next to each other. He moves his left foot to play both.

8. Jay Weinberg

When you play drums for Slipknot, you need to have a large and wonderful setup. It’s tradition, and Jay Weinberg is following in Joey Jordison’s footsteps. He has a huge kit that allows him to play all the Slipknot drum parts.

9. Aquiles Priester

Metal drummers always have the craziest drum kit setups, and Aquiles Priester has been using a huge set for most of his career. The red cymbals paired with red drumheads are what really make the kit look interesting.
