Pearl Export Series Review

Practical Buying Guide

Introduction:

The Pearl Export drums have been one of the most popular sets for the past two decades. They’re primarily aimed at beginner drummers, but they sound so good that drummers of all levels could happily use them.

In this review, we’re specifically going to look at the 8-piece shell pack option. This is a monster drum kit that comes with two bass drums and a bunch of toms to create a monster setup.

We’ll discuss all the features, who the kit is good for, and how the cost compares to other options available.

Key Features

All of the shells on this kit are a mixture between poplar and mahogany. Pearl’s Superior Shell Technology is used to put them all together.

The kit includes the following shells:

  • 14” x 5.5” snare drum
  • 8” x 7” rack tom
  • 10” x 7” rack tom
  • 12” x 8” rack tom
  • 14” x 14” floor tom
  • 16” x 16” floor tom
  • 2x 22” x 16” kick drums

The set also comes with a full pack of Pearl’s 830-Series hardware, along with two P-930 bass drum pedals.

PROS: THINGS WE LIKED
  • Incredible value when considering how many parts there are
  • Great tonal quality for a beginner drum set
  • Ideal option for drummers who want a large setup
  • One of the only available 8-piece shell packs
CONS: THINGS WE DIDN'T LIKE
  • Not a good option for drummers who don’t want a large kit, as they could get a high-end set for the same price

FEATURED ON

What to Expect from the Pearl Export Series?

Quality

The main quality feature of the is the hybrid shell design. With poplar and mahogany mixed, you get warm tones from each tom that sit more toward the low-end. This gives you some huge sounding drums when you tune them low.

The bass drums also exhibit massive sounds, giving you punchy and forceful strokes. This is perfect for metal drumming, which is what most drummers would use this kind of kit for.

Even though this is a beginner drum set, the toms all sound surprisingly good. That’s mostly thanks to the mahogany plies in each shell, as other beginner kits just have poplar plies.

Construction

Another top feature of the kit is the quality of all the hardware. Pearl is one of the best drum brands if you’re looking for solid and durable hardware. Even the most affordable hardware lines are amazing.

So, every piece that holds this kit together feels massively stable and durable. We love that the P-830 hardware pack is included, as you only have to add cymbals here to have a full setup.

Those hardware stands can easily be used with high-end drum kits in the future, so it’s already a fantastic investment.

Performance

The best thing about playing such a large set is that you have a lot of options. There are so many different sounds to play with here.

With that said, this is basically just a drum kit for metal drummers. That’s the only kind of musical environment where you’d need such a large setup. It’s a bit overkill for any other type of setting.

However, you could easily split this into two different drum sets. You’d just need to add in a snare drum. That could be another great use for this shell pack.

Price to Value:

This is, without a doubt, one of the best value shell packs on offer at the moment. We can’t think of any other option that gives you more value for what you pay.

You’re almost getting two whole drum sets for just over $1500. That includes hardware to hold everything together.

So, the price-to-value ratio is incredibly high. The only thing you need to consider is whether to get a much higher-quality drum set for the same price. It just won’t have as many parts.

Conclusion

I love the Pearl Export Series 8-Piece, and we think its such an iconic product in the drumming world.

It realistically isn’t a viable option for seasoned or professional drummers, but it’s a really fun pick for beginner or intermediate players. It’s also a good pick for drum teachers who want to buy two kits in one package.

If any of that fits your situation, we highly recommend getting the kit!

I’m crazy about drums, it’s been my passion since I was 12 years old. I played in numerous bands going through different styles like Rock, Progressive, Pop & Jazz-Rock.
