Are electronic drum sets worth it?

Practical Guide

Intro

When looking to get a drum kit, you need to choose between an acoustic or electronic set. Both are designed for specific purposes, with acoustic drum sets being the go-to option for most people.

If you already have an acoustic drum set, you may be wondering whether you should get an electronic set or not. There are countless drummers that own both, and for very good reasons.

In this article, we’re going to briefly explain why getting an electronic drum kit is a great idea.

Are electronic drum sets worth it?

1. Sound Restrictions

The most obvious reason to get an electronic drum set is if you aren’t able to make noise with an acoustic one. Acoustic drum kits are very loud, and not everyone has neighbors that are happy with hearing one being played all the time.

This is especially a problem for drummers who live in apartments. So, you should get an electronic drum kit if it just isn’t possible to play an acoustic kit in the living space you’re in.

A lot of people look at the kit and think that it’s positioned completely wrong. However, it works well for Daru’s playing style, and he’s played with some top-tier artists over the years.

2. Space Restrictions

Not many people think about this, but most electronic drum kits are much smaller than acoustic kits. A standard acoustic drum kit will take up as much space as a large office desk, while all electronic drum kits that cost under $1000 could easily fit into a corner.

If you can only use a small space for your drums, you’ll most likely be more comfortable fitting an electronic drum kit there compared to an acoustic one.

A lot of drummers have electronic drum kits that they tightly squeeze into their bedrooms.

3. Practicing

One of the best parts about electronic drum kits is that they allow you to practice more than acoustic drum kits do. Even if your neighbors are happy with you playing loud drums, they won’t be happy with you playing them at midnight.

You can get away with practicing your skills on an electronic drum kit at any time of the day, as long as no one in your close vicinity can hear you. You just need to put a pair of headphones on.

It’s a great idea to have both an acoustic and electronic drum kit to play. If you want to work on a few ideas without bothering anyone, you can just hop onto the electronic kit.

4. Electronic Sounds

While all electronic drum modules have preset drum kit sounds to replicate acoustic drums, they also have a variety of electronic sounds. These are sounds that you can’t play on an acoustic drum kit, so it’s a lot of fun to use them while playing the pads.

Some drummers require these sounds for performances, so they integrate electronic drum kit pads within their acoustic setups. Those are called hybrid drum sets.

If you want to use and play electronic sounds, you’ll need an electronic drum kit to do it.

FAQ:

Do professional drummers use electronic drums?

Yes, most professional drummers have used electronic drums at some point or another. Most of their reasons for using electronic drums are the same as beginners. This includes space and noise issues.

However, many professional drummers use electronic drums in various settings where they need to play electronic sounds that acoustic drums can’t produce. This is very popular in styles like R&B and pop.

How much is an electronic drum set?

Electronic drum sets range from $200 to $10 000. All the kits costing below $1000 are entry-level options. Anything between $1000 and $2000 is a bit higher in quality with much better pads and sounds.

All the kits that cost over $2000 are professional level. They’re designed to replicate the experience of playing an acoustic drum kit as closely as possible. If want to learn more we have a complete article on electronic drum cost

Conclusion

Another thing to note is that electronic drum kits make recording your playing very easy. You just need to plug the module into your computer via a MIDI USB cable. That’s much simpler than using microphones and an interface, which is what you need to do with acoustic drums

So, do you need an electronic drum set? It depends on your current situation and limitations. However, every drummer in the world can benefit from owning one.
